1. When do you have meetings?

Meetings are held every Wednesday at 7:30 P.M. with the following general schedule:

First, Third and Fourth Wednesday - Layout Construction
Second Wednesday - Operations Night
Fifth Wednesday (if any) - Additional Operations night

The last Wednesday of each quarter, in March, June, September and December are business meetings. Occasional sessions are sometimes also held on Sunday to allow members to run their personal equipment outside the structured activities of an Operations Night.  We call these “Run What Ya Brung” sessions.

2. Where are you located?

We are located at 57 River Road in Essex Junction, VT. Check the Location page for more details!

3. What is an Operations Night?

Operations Nights are those times when we run the layout in as much the same way real railroads do as possible. Trains run on schedules and they deliver loads and empties to industries modeled on the layout. We try to follow real practices as much as we can, such as sounding the proper whistle signals at various times, etc.  It really makes the layout come to life!

4. What about non-members? Are they allowed to come to a meeting?

Absolutely!  We welcome guests at any time.  If you choose to visit us on a work night or operations night, you’ll likely soon find yourself with a tool or a throttle in hand and an experienced member by your side to guide you.  Although we do not prohibit guests from attending business meetings, you will almost certainly find a work or operations night to be far more interesting!

5. Do you have an age limit for members?

We do not have an age limit for members. We offer several classes of membership as defined in our
By-laws, some of which may be more suitable for children than the Regular membership simply by virtue of their modeling skill set. Parents may not wish to pay for a Regular membership, for example, if their children are too young to work with common hand tools, understand voting initiatives, etc.  In such cases, the Associate Membership might be a better choice. We do require that children below the age of 13 be accompanied by a parent when attending meetings and events.

6. What is a Run What You Brung event?

Run What You Brung events are the NWV’s casual layout operating events.  Members may bring and run whatever manner of locomotives and rolling stock they see fit. There’s no timetable to follow, no goods to deliver and no requirement to do anything but have fun and enjoy the company of fellow model railroaders.  These events usually occur on a weekend afternoon and are hosted by a volunteer member, so scheduling of these is irregular and they tend to occur less frequently in the summer.
