Our mission is to preserve and teach the art and craft of model railroading to the next generation.
The Northwestern Vermont Model Railroad Association, Inc. (NWV) was formed on January 1, 2008 by model railroaders with the purpose of teaching and preserving the art and craft of model railroading. For 30 years, the modelers who preceeded this new organization had been meeting and creating a model railroad empire first in Colchester and then Essex Junction, our current home. The members wanted to go beyond that. They worked to achieve governmental recognition as an educational organization to formalize their work and bring it into the public spot light.
The corporation, Northwestern Vermont Model Railroad Association, Inc. was formed and an application for a federal 501(c)3, tax exempt educational organization was submitted in March 2008. Tax exempt status was granted by the IRS in June 2008 and the membership of the NWV began the serious task of organizing their experience and promoting model railroading. We invite you to spend some time looking around our web site. We are adding new features as quickly as they can be completed. Classes in various aspects of the model railroading are offered in an ongoing program designed to give someone with little or no model railroad experience the confidence either to begin their own railroad or to participate in club activities.
Current members of the NWV include both novice and experienced model railroaders and we have had men, women, and parent & youth members. Some members are retired, some work full time. We vary widely in our educational backgrounds and daily occupations but share a common goal - we love model railroading and the railroad heritage the built America. Membership in the NWV is always open and we welcome interested parties regardless of age, gender or modeling experience to join in our endeavors. We have the NWV Bylaws posted on this web site for you to read. If you are ready to join us, just complete a membership application. Additional key documents can be found through this document link.
Meetings are held every Wednesday night at 7:30 P.M. at our classroom and layout facility in the Pinewood Plaza Center on River Road in Essex Junction. We usually schedule the second Wednesday of each month for operating the layout, where the members run the railroad just like the real thing! Please consult our calendar page to be sure before planning your visit. A map and directions are available on the location page.
The members are continuing construction on our HO scale NWV layout with approximate dimensions of 30' x 30' and over 200 feet of mainline track. We model the 1970's era, with a few exceptions here & there. We also host "Run What U Brung" sessions where any type of train from any era is warmly supported. We enjoy seeing members with their many different interests in the modeling world having fun with their hobby!
